Little Engine is hiring a Founding Backend & AI Engineer to help build an AI-native back office platform for solo service professionals. This is a senior, zero-to-one engineering role focused on designing scalable backend systems and advancing agentic AI experiences that power real-world business automation.
Little Engine recently closed a multi-million dollar pre-seed round and is led by repeat founders who have previously built and sold award-winning consumer applications, including an Apple Best App of the Year.

Key Responsibilities
- Design and build scalable backend systems using Python, FastAPI, and PostgreSQL
- Lead development of multi-agent orchestration systems (user agents, client agents, task flows)
- Implement and manage AI memory systems, including long-term and ephemeral context
- Build fast, resilient in-product AI experiences that feel seamless to users
- Integrate external services such as Twilio (SMS), Stripe, and Google Calendar
- Optimize system performance, reliability, and observability
- Own backend architecture decisions from early-stage through scale
Requirements / Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Deep experience building Python backends serving real users at scale
- Strong understanding of AI-powered systems and agentic workflows
- Experience delivering features end-to-end, including production monitoring
- Knowledge of AI memory systems, embeddings, or hybrid memory architectures
- Strong product instincts and attention to user experience
- Ability to thrive in fast-paced startup environments
- Actively building with AI tools within the past 6 months
Preferred Experience
- Hands-on experience with agent frameworks such as LangGraph, CrewAI, Letta (MemGPT), or similar
- Experience scaling early-stage systems
- Background working on real-time, user-facing applications
- Familiarity with vector databases and retrieval systems

- Base salary: $150,000 – $200,000 per year
